Background
Rick Roiden was born June 5, 1964 in San Antonio, Texas. He attended Alamo Heights High School. He worked as an editor for the school newspaper and won third place in state for UIL feature writing. He began college at North Texas State because he wanted to be a guitar player and they had the best music school. Then later transferred to the University of Texas at Austin and graduated with a double major in English and history. And taught in the San Antonio Independent School District.
Childhood
The first book that Rick ever read for fun by himself was the Lord of the Rings. He probably read it 10 times. Rick also liked Greek and Norse mythology since he was in middle school. He read mostly fantasy and science fiction in high school, then got interested in mysteries when he got into college. His parents were both teachers and artists. The first story that Rick submitted for publication was when he was 13. But it wasn't published. His first published works were 2 short stories in the UTSA literary magazine.
Work Experience
When Rick was in college, he worked for three years as the music director at a summer camp, Camp Capers. This is where he got the idea for Camp Half-Blood in the Percy Jackson series. Rick's first full-time job was teaching middle school in New Braunfels, Texas. After that, his wife and him moved to San Francisco. They lived there for eight years and Rick taught at Presidio Hill School. Then they had their two sons, Haley and Patrick, and they moved back home to San Antonio. Rick taught at Saint Mary’s Hall school for six years, then stopped teaching to become a full-time writer. he taught mythology almost every year that he was a teacher. It was always his favorite thing, and the students always liked it too.

Why Rick Wrote this book.
The reason that Rick wanted to write the Red Pyramid was because he wanted to write another series about mythology besides the Percy Jackson series. All his other books were written for adults so that was the only children's series that he wrote.
