Carter Kane
Carter is 14 years old, Carter is the descendant of Ancient Egyptian Magicians; he is one of the main protagonists. He is described as always dressing impeccably in khaki pants, dress shoes, and a button-up shirt. He is the host of Horus, his main weapon is a khopesh, an Ancient Egyptian sword favored by guards of the Pharaoh. His specialty is combat magic. Towards the beginning of the book Carter was very bad at everything that he did and had no self confidence. At the end of the book Carter became a calm and capable leader, realizing his destiny is to become the pharaoh of the House of life. Although Carter had to go through some very tough times as a kid, such as his mom dying and his dad getting trapped in a coffin, he still ends up as a great person and fulfills his destiny of becoming the ruler of the house of life.
Sadie Kane
Sadie Kane is 12 years old. Sadie is Carter's sister, and shares his magical ability. She was raised in England by her grandparents after her mother died. She has light skin, caramel colored hair with one red streak on the left side, blue eyes, and never goes anywhere without combat boots and headphones. She is a powerful and natural magician who can read hieroglyphics and understand Ancient Egyptian. Later in the book she becomes the host of Isis.
Zia Rashid
Zia is a powerful magician who Carter Kane has affection for. She is considered to be the most promising student in the First Nome. She is the unknowing host of Nephthys. Zia is highly intelligent, and is often harsh, determined, and single- minded, making her an excellent fighter and strategist. She is also however, passionate, holds dear ones close to her heart, and possesses a warm, soft and more vulnerable side that she rarely allows to show.
Anubis
Anubis is the god of funerals and the assistant of Osiris. His two forms are the form of a human with a jackals head, or as described in the book, an attractive teenaged boy. He and Sadie show strong and mutual feeling towards each other. He was actually born to Set and Nephthys but was only raised by Nephthys because she didn't want him to know his father. The coolest thing about Anubis is that he has the power to summon mummy wrappings.
Bast
Bast is the goddess of cats, her host is Muffin, Sadie Kane's cat. She is also a deadly combat mage. She is sworn to protect the Kane siblings no matter what happens. Although loving and playful, Bast has a serious side to her that surfaces in the face of danger. Bast considers herself a coward for abandoning her duty to fight Apophis and because she will run when frightened. Despite this, Bast has made many self-sacrificing decisions to protect Sadie and Carter, showing her true nature as a brave warrior. She is also very protective of Carter and especially Sadie. For example, after Horus and Isis had threatened them "she looked as though she wanted to shred Horus like a scratching post." pg. 423.
Set
Set is arrogant, cunning, cruel, manipulative and enjoys toying with his enemies often for his own personal entertainment. He is the main antagonist in the story. He is over 1,000,0oo years old Sadie described him as being ruthless, and cruel. Throughout the book he has shown a sense of humor. He is, however, hinted to have an honorable side to him. His first concern is always himself and is willing to submit to his enemies if it is in his best interest. He wants nothing other than to take over the entire world. Set, along with his siblings, is released by Julius Kane while attempting to summon Osiris. He kidnaps Julius who has become the host for Osiris and possesses Amos Kane. He then charges the demons under his command to construct a pyramid in Phoenix, Arizona to serve as both a medium for his power and a vessel for his being. He originally intends to turn all of North America into a desert, but is manipulated by Apophis into targeting the entire world. Set is eventually subdued by Carter Kane and Sadie Kane who uses his secret name, Evil Day, against him and exposes Apophis influence to him before forcing the god into an alliance against their mutual enemy.
